While there is plenty to see and do on Lake Winnipesaukee, you have to check out the sandbars. These are the perfect areas for dropping an anchor, cracking a cold beverage, and taking it easy. However, beaching a boat on a sandbar does require some practice. Whether you’re an avid boater or a newbie, follow the steps below to ensure a stress-free process. We’ll also tell you where to find the best sandbars on the lake!
How to Anchor on a Sandbar
On Lake Winnipesaukee, rather than beaching a boat on an actual beach, you’re better off anchoring one in shallow water. Luckily, there are some great sandbars to make this possible. First off, you want to ensure your boat isn’t touching the sandy lake floor. Try to find an area that isn’t too shallow.
Once you found the right spot, follow these tips on how to safely anchor your boat on a sandbar:
- Approach in idle and make sure your boat remains floating at all times.
- As someone is driving the boat, have a crew member drop the anchor and let out the line.
- As you move towards the desired area, make sure the crew member keeps the line away from the propeller.
- Once you’re in the right spot, tie up the line and cleat it off.
- Turn off the engine and trim the motor up to avoid it hitting the bottom.
- When the water is about waist deep, have a crew member place the stern anchor on the opposite side of the bow line.
- Let the boat pivot so it’s facing away from the sandbar.
- Tie up the stern and bow lines until tight. This helps the boat stay in place.
- When leaving, get on the boat and let out some forward anchor line.
- Have crew members pull the boat back, get everyone on, and pull up the stern anchor.
- Use the bow anchor line to pull the boat forward, lower the engine, start it, lift the anchor, and you’re finished!
While beaching a boat on a sandbar isn’t easy, the tips above can help. This is the perfect way to enjoy yourself at Lake Winnipesaukee!
